Rapes and prejudices
After Swiss woman’s gang rape incident-that took place in MP, globally, India has become infamous for
rape incidents. Swiss diplomats rebuked India demanding the justice. In the
meanwhile, many foreign countries, like UK issued travel advisory for tourists
in India. Unfortunately India has been badly stuck with rape incidents. To the
highest degree of brutality, there are many incidents where police themselves committed
to this crime. After Delhi gang rape incident, we have seen too much
mobilization around the incident. Good thing is that people belong to different
walks of life condemned the incident and it seems all are really interested in
finding the solution. There may be some people, like me, might have been
pessimistic about the progress, after all many mass movements have been
derailed out of their objectives when movement’s/organizations’ ideals turned to
political ideas. I believe this is the real problem with India, in general.
When mass gathered at Delhi protest urged strict laws to curb such incidents as a very realistic approach, there are idealists who look down upon any civil code that would stop it, but stress on moral aspects of approach. Nevertheless either approaches need to be more conspicuous about their idea, they would passably work fine with genuine effort. Amidst the nation's revolt against the barbarous crime, and clamor for justice, we are likely going to witness another shocking phenomenon that, the main accused of Delhi gang-rape case - Mohammad Afroz is going to be freed after a few months because he is 4 months less than 18 as per school records. (Now amendments have been made lowering the age to16, but not sure of its implementation). This intern ensuring us need of very aggressive steps to fight against the odds of the system. Though in the past, we've witnessed a brutal injustice when ex-president Pratibha Patil herself commuted death sentence for 7 rapists (though that was need not be on her interest alone, but could be high command’s decision as well), now it's high time to urge government to amend the strict laws, as well as to contemplate other ways to curb the cause.
Apart from people who imparted honestly addressing the real problem, we have other elements in the society who are keen upon viewing the whole incident in their biased mindset and put-forth their opinions that sometime seem to me as a sheer outcome of their prejudice or ignorance. Unfortunately, these gravely concerned incidents becoming political agenda to settle their score. Feminists say it’s because of male dominant society, Communist Arundati Roy says rape incidents in higher classes are only recognized, secularists attack religion in pretext of condemning the rapes. With all above this I’m seeing prejudices, but not serious concerns. I just want to look thoroughly of few I came across:
“Don’t worship them, just learn to respect women”
At the first sight it seems to be very apt, a mockery of double standard of the people of the system where at the one side, woman is portrayed as God, on the other side woman is downtrodden, which in turn gives a notion that people who practice worshiping are failed to give the respect for women. But at the deep down, if you contemplate, these cards are much used by prejudiced minds to mete out their ends. This, not only makes mockery of society, but peculiarly makes mockery of “cultural system” practicing idolatry. Hence, many anti-idolaters are much getting interested in adhering to this quote as it gratifies their anti-idolatry idea (faith). Secondly, secularists, rationalists love to hold this slogan to attack the theology and religious dogmas to prove that, they are reasons for women’s oppression.
Is this quote objective to address the problem?
Obviously, it’s ridiculous to call it as an objective one. The reason is, statement is carefully woven with “false cause logical fallacy”, where two independent acts-1)worshiping female idol, 2)Abuse on women- are correlated each other, though one has no influence on another, so that both together give some idea of their interest. In general, any woman is pertinent to be respected like any other human beings. Hence separating woman from rest of the human beings by giving it as “women need to be respected” leaves separate status so that, that indeed places them distinct from men, and that itself violates the view of equality. In other words, as long as woman is treated respectfully like any other human beings socially, you never categorize as a woman, but as a general human being. Or as long as there is an inequality and disrespect for women, you keep shouting “women need to be respected”. Secondly, why personification of women as God is to be tinged with rape for any reasons? Does this idolatry anyways promote rapes, or, in some or other way related with rapes? It’s true that in this land where women are worshiped getting abused. But how worshiping women had belittled the women’s dignity or has little influence on that? Are all those who committed rapes had worshiped women and by that did they commit it? Worshiping a woman and committing rapes are two independent acts. Why both have to be correlated each other unless they have little influence on one another? Mr. Mahesh Bhatt’s tweet in twitter “Shut all temples where you pretend to worship the female form” also uses same logical fallacy though his own moral commitment to his works and life is sharp contrary to any assessment he could make on moral basis.
Somewhere I saw this:
“Don’t tell your daughter to not to step outside at night, but teach your son to not to rape”
This is the outburst of feminists when their counterpart male chauvinist radicals tried to confine women wearing sensible dresses and from socializing. This debate created huge furor, but progress on the issue was withheld.
I would disagree with both feminists and male chauvinists for different reasons. At first I would like to make analysis on both the perspectives. In general, any problem solving needs to be analyzed carefully, where real world problems of myriad dependencies need morphological analysis. Likely rape incidents too have many factors associated with, out of which solution should be dealt with fixing the root causes that’s against of social etiquette practiced. But male chauvinists pick the factors that erratically influence the root cause, and fail to acknowledge the root cause itself. Perhaps you may avoid rape incidents by covering women fully, or by completely secluding them from the society. But even then it is obvious that you have avoided the problem by confiscating one’s rights, but you never solved the problem as it never dealt with stopping rapists’ mentality to commit crime. Escapism can never be a solution, or sometimes it may escalate the problem.

Next is irrational account of feminists. Their
biggest problem is generalizing all men in their model. According to them, rape incidents
are just because of the male instinct to exploit woman. Perhaps they are right
in describing those men are not inculcated the morals, principles, but I don’t
believe that’s only the reason. A common man-servant-, who is servile to a
woman of higher status, never think of raping her- however brutal he may be
inside-, but, however, he may not hesitate to rape poor domestic help. The
reason is his well acknowledgement of his social position and societal
conditions. Take another example of Suryanelli gang rape case. She was raped by
42 men during the period of 1 month. As she explained later, she had an affair
with the conductor who used her photograph to blackmail her into going trip
with him. On the way with him, he disappeared, as a part of their plan, and
later she was kidnapped by woman who was in turn working for SS Sudarshan. SS
Sudarshan took her all over to the Kerala where she raped by 42 men including
PJ Kurien-who was union minister then and now deputy chairman of Rajyasabha- at
different times. The entire case has taken political turn with the revelation
of PJ Kurien’s name. Newspapers like Malayalam Manorama itself turned
against the victim and inferred she was into sex trade. Where were feminists in
support of her? Feminists’ interpretations always encircle within narrow
perspective of male and female bifurcations, but never have they had
definitions on other social, political exploitation. Do their naive aspects of
rape explain this whole incident? I afraid it doesn’t. Responsible factors of
this incident can be listed as follows:
1. A
girl herself giving chance to get blackmailed.
2. Fragile
legal system.
3. Cruel
imperialism owing to social status.
Here, third factor that exists is irrespective of
male or female classification, or one's physical strength, and that’s what feminists fail
to recognize. It’s indeed true that women are exploited in the society, but it’s
not just because they are physically weak. If that was so, the one who physically
strongest would only had dominated the society.
Finally I afraid, I may not able to conclude fully
fledged solution to the problem, but however as I already pointed out, we need to
develop society of moral values-of course a long term plan-, strong legal
system that practices democratic values irrespective of caste, creed, and social
status. Moreover we need society where citizens should understand their social
responsibility to combat anti-social elements with wider views, and conspicuous
comprehension rather than endeavoring into unyielding, narrow organizational perspectives.
